On Making Things in Small Batches

What it means to grow a skincare brand a little at a time.

Words by Russ & Rose 3 Min Read

There is a particular feeling that comes with seeing our products together, ready to leave us. We remember when Russ & Rose was still a conversation between siblings. Now, someone we have never met might place our cleanser beside their bathroom sink, or reach for our cream before leaving for work.

That thought still means something to us.

We founded Russ & Rose in 2024, bringing our backgrounds in pharmacy and nursing into a shared idea of everyday care. We began with two products: a Gentle Cleansing Foam and a Lightweight Hydrating Cream. A small collection, with a place in an ordinary day.

Working in small batches is part of this beginning.

What small batch means to us

At its simplest, small-batch skincare means producing in smaller quantities. There is no single batch size that the phrase communicates, and the words alone cannot tell you how well a product is formulated or made.

For us, it means working at a scale that fits where we are. We are still an independent Filipino brand, learning how our products find their way into people’s routines and how to build a business around that.

There are practical decisions behind this: how much stock to hold, when to plan another production run, and where to put our resources. These are less romantic than the phrase “small batch” might suggest. They are also an important part of keeping a young brand going.

Small does not replace standards

We want to be thoughtful about what we ask those two words to carry.

A smaller batch does not automatically make skincare safer, gentler, fresher, or more effective. Those qualities depend on the formula, manufacturing controls, appropriate testing, packaging, and storage.

The same care is needed regardless of how many units are produced.

We see small batch as a description of our scale. The products themselves still need to earn their place on your shelf.

There is room to listen

With a small collection, our attention keeps returning to the same everyday questions.

How does the cleanser feel after rinsing? Does the cream sit comfortably beneath sunscreen? Is there something about the directions that could be clearer?

Our professional backgrounds inform the questions we ask. Your experience brings another perspective: what happens when a product becomes part of a busy morning, a humid commute, or the few minutes you have to yourself before bed.

Listening does not mean changing a formula with every suggestion. It means taking feedback seriously and giving decisions the time and consideration they deserve.

Growing from here

We hope Russ & Rose grows. We hope more people discover our products, and that some choose to return when their bottles are empty.

For now, we are building from two essentials, Philippine botanicals such as Akapulko and Ar-arusip, and the lessons that come with running a young brand.

Small batches are part of our story at this moment. What we hope stays with us, whatever our size, is the attention we give to the products and the people using them.

Thank you for making room for us in your everyday life.
